NEW YORK — New York City Police Department officers fatally shot a man in East Harlem after receiving multiple 911 calls from people concerned about a man with a gun in the area.

The ShotSpotter operations and calls resulted in a heavy police presence along Third Avenue at East 103rd Street overnight, police said.

Officers ordered man to drop weapon “multiple times”

Officers said they found a 62-year-old man with a gun in his hand near 1875 Third Avenue around 12:30 a.m. Sunday morning.

The officers repeatedly ordered him to drop the weapon, but he did not, the NYPD said. Two officers then opened fire, shooting him, police said.

“The officers gave multiple verbal commands to drop the weapon, which the man did not comply with. The two officers discharged their firearms and struck the man. The officers immediately called for EMS and performed CPR. The man was transported to an area hospital and was pronounced dead. A weapon was recovered at the scene and there are no suspects at this time,” said NYPD Housing Director Martine Materasso.

The NYPD shared a photo of the weapon found at the crime scene on X.

The shooting is still under investigation. No one was injured.
