Oct. 11—LIMA — Ohio Republican Party leaders voiced their opposition to State Issue 1’s redistricting efforts Friday morning during a visit to Lima.
Attendees gathered at the Allen County GOP headquarters, 927 N. Cable Road, as two elected officials discussed their thoughts on Issue 1. Lima was the first of six stops for the Ohio Republican Party’s “No on One” bus tour on Friday.
Ohio Republican Party Chairman Alex Triantafilou and State Auditor Keith Faber of Celina each spoke about why they thought the proposed amendment was dangerous and untrue.
“Issue 1 is a scam and a lie by the far left to win elections that they otherwise could not win in this state,” Triantafilou said. “They’re the ones doing the gerrymandering. The leaders will only look at partisanship.’
Faber emphasized the money supporting the amendment.
“Follow the money,” he said. “Explain that $25 million of dark money, special interest money that they’re blowing through the airwaves to convince people to vote ‘yes’ doesn’t come from Ohio. It’s all about changing the rules.”
Faber added that proportionality will never work and informed attendees that many local officials are against Issue 1.
“The Democratic Party has gone five, six, seven different steps to the left, outside the mainstream of American politics,” Triantafilou said. “They hardly believe in capitalism, they don’t know what a man or a woman is, and they hardly want to stand up and honor America for ‘The Star-Spangled Banner,’ so what happened? They started losing elections in states like Ohio. This is one of the ways they are trying to change the rules to win elections.”
Triantafilou said that if the amendment is passed, there will be fifteen unelected bureaucrats who will not be accountable to voters, and that there will be no option to vote out the officials, which he labeled as “fundamental un-American’.
