Olympics: Scheffler, McIlroy and Rahm lead the men’s golf field

Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm are among the notable names to make the full 60-man Olympic field, it was announced Tuesday morning.

Xander Schauffele, who won the gold medal at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, is also part of the field. The other two American participants are Collin Morikawa and Wyndham Clark. Because the Olympic qualifying formula is based on the official World Golf Rankings, Bryson DeChambeau – who plays on the LIV Golf tour not covered by OWGR – will not be part of the team.

Names familiar to golf fans are scattered throughout the field, from recent US Open leader Ludvig Åberg to defending Tour Championship winner Viktor Hovland to 2021 Masters winner Hideki Matsuyama. The top of the field consists of the top fifteen ranked players, which is why the United States has four players – the upper limit for any country. The remaining 45 players received an at-large bid, with a limit of two players for each country. The women’s field will be announced after the qualifying round on June 24.

The Olympic golf format will be familiar: four days of stroke play at Le Golf National outside Paris, the location of the 2018 Ryder Cup and a resounding European victory. The men’s tournament runs from August 1 to 4, while the women’s tournament takes place from August 10 to 13.
