A man in his 30s has been killed and several others injured in a shooting at a Turkish wedding in northeastern France, police said.
French media report that three armed, masked men arrived at the reception in Thionville late on Saturday evening and opened fire on the guests.
According to police sources, the newspaper Le Figaro reported that the attackers arrived at 1:15 a.m. local time to “take revenge on the gangs in Moselle”.
According to police, a pregnant woman is among the injured. Three of the injured are said to be in critical condition in a nearby hospital in Bel-Air.
About 100 people were celebrating at Eden Palace when the gunmen arrived at the event in a 4×4 car in the Lorraine region, near the borders with Germany and Luxembourg, according to French media.
“At a quarter past one in the morning, a group of people went outside to smoke in front of the hall, after which three heavily armed men opened fire in their direction,” a police source was quoted by AFP.
The men are said to have used automatic weapons and hunting rifles.
In a statement, prosecutor Nancy Francois Capin-Dulhoste said the men fired “several dozen times,” adding that four people were hit by the bullets. The victims are said to be between 25 and 50 years old.
When emergency services arrived, the attackers had already fled.
Local newspaper Le Républicain Lorrain reports that police are investigating whether the vehicle came from Germany or Luxembourg, about 15 km away.
The border region of Lorraine has often seen violent incidents related to drug trafficking.
According to Le Parisien, the dead and injured are known to the authorities as drug-related cases.
In May 2023, a shootout between rival gangs in the neighboring town of Villerupt left five people injured.
