One dead, five injured in shooting at wedding in France

A shooting at a wedding party in France in the early hours of Sunday left one dead and five injured, broadcaster France Info reported, citing investigators.

One young man was killed and five other victims were injured, some seriously. A pregnant woman was slightly injured and suffered shock, local newspaper Le Républicain Lorrain reported.

When emergency services arrived, the shooters had already fled.

About 100 people were celebrating in a party hall in the town of Thionville in the Lorraine region, near the German and Luxembourg borders, when three masked assailants opened fire with two assault rifles and a hunting rifle, France Info reported.

The gunmen arrived in an SUV around 1 a.m. on Sunday (2300 GMT Saturday) and initially shot at three people outside the ballroom, where members of the Turkish community were celebrating a wedding, the report said.

They then allegedly shot at two people at the entrance and fled in their vehicle.

According to media reports, forensic experts from the police department were still working to secure evidence from the crime scene on Sunday morning.

The motive for the attack was initially unclear.
