One death following a three-car crash on Garners Ferry Road in Richland County

One person was killed Thursday morning in Richland County after a deadly collision involving three vehicles, officials said.

The crash occurred at 6:54 a.m. on Garners Ferry Road, about four miles south of the city of Columbia, South Carolina Highway Patrol Master Trooper William Bennett said in a news release.

A 2001 Ford Taurus struck a 1994 Chevy S-10 pickup from behind when the Chevy slowed to make a U-turn at an intersection of McCords Ferry Road, the highway patrol said. A 2021 Chevy Silverado then struck the pickup truck that had been pushed westbound on Garners Ferry after initially being struck, Bennett said.

The driver of an S-10 pickup died at the scene, highway police said. The identity of the deceased has not been publicly released.

The Ford Taurus had only the driver in the car, who was taken to the hospital, and the driver and passenger of the Chevy Silverado were also taken to the hospital, Bennett said.

The collision remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
