One person is hospitalized after the roof of a building partially collapses in the Massachusetts city

One person was taken to the hospital after the roof of a building in a southern Massachusetts town partially collapsed Wednesday evening, officials said.

The collapse happened at the corner of South Main and Mendon streets around 9 p.m., causing rocks to rain onto the sidewalk below, according to Uxbridge police.

Mendon Street at the intersection of Route 16 and Route 122 to Oak Street will be closed for the “foreseeable future” as inspectors assess damage, police warned motorists.

The Uxbridge Fire Department said the injured victim was taken to UMass Memorial Medical Center for treatment. There was no immediate word on their condition.

Video from the scene showed the building cordoned off with yellow tape and a pile of dislodged bricks on the ground next to the Mendon Street Kitchen.

Police described the incident as a “roof compromise.”

The partial collapse occurred when heavy rain soaked and flooded the area.
