One person was killed Saturday evening in a crash that left another person hospitalized, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The single-vehicle crash occurred in Lexington County, Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway said.
According to Ridgeway, a 2016 Harley-Davidson was traveling north on US 21 around 8:50 p.m. Near the intersection with Interstate 26, the motorcycle ran off the right side of the road, where it struck several construction barrels and a traffic sign before spilling, Ridgeway said.
The motorcyclist died at the scene and a passenger was taken to Prisma Health Richland hospital, according to Ridgeway. No further information about the passenger’s condition was available.
The Lexington County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the driver.
No other injuries were reported.
It was not stated whether the driver or passenger were wearing helmets.
No information was available on what caused the motorcycle to leave the road, but the crash remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.
At least 817 people had died on South Carolina roadways through Nov. 3, 2024, according to the Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in accidents in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 44 people have died in accidents in Lexington County in 2024, according to DPS data. There were 45 deaths reported in the county in 2023, DPS said.
