One person was killed and another injured in a crash on Interstate 26 Wednesday evening, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The two-vehicle collision occurred on a stretch of I-26 running through Calhoun County, Master Trooper Brandon Bolt said.
According to Bolt, both a 2021 Toyota SUV and a 2017 Ford sedan were traveling westbound on I-26. At the 135-mile mark, the Toyota was braking for traffic when the Ford struck it from behind, killing the SUV’s driver, Bolt said.
The Calhoun County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the Toyota driver.
According to Bolt, a passenger in the Toyota was taken by helicopter to an area hospital. No further information about the passenger’s condition was available.
Bolt said the driver, who was the only person in the Ford, was not injured. No other injuries were reported.
There was no word on whether anyone involved in the crash was wearing a seat belt, but the wreck remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.
Through Sunday, 785 people had died on South Carolina roadways in 2024, according to the Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in accidents in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least four people have died in accidents in Calhoun County in 2024, according to DPS data.
