One person killed in scooter-SUV crash in Columbia, S.C. police say

One person died days in a Richland County hospital after a crash on a road in Columbia, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The two-vehicle collision occurred June 12 around 9:30 p.m., Master Trooper Brandon Bolt said Sunday.

According to Bolt, both a scooter and a 2024 Volkswagen SUV were traveling west on Bluff Road when they collided.

The scooter rider was taken to Prisma Health Richland hospital and later died, Bolt said. No information was available about when the rider died, and the Richland County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the victim.

Bolt said the driver of the SUV was not injured and no other injuries were reported.

It was not stated whether the driver of the SUV was wearing a seat belt or whether the scooter rider was wearing a helmet.

Information about the cause of the collision between the vehicles was not available, but the crash remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.

At least 399 people had died on South Carolina roadways through June 9 in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in accidents in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 22 people have died in crashes in Richland County in 2024, according to DPS data. There were 61 deaths in the county in 2023, DPS reported.
