One person was killed in a crash on a road in the Midlands on Saturday evening, leaving three other people hospitalized, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The two-vehicle collision happened in Fairfield County around 7:15 p.m., said Cpl. Nick Pee.
According to Pye, both a 2013 Chevrolet SUV and a 2003 Ford van were traveling north on U.S. 21. At the intersection with Old 21 Road, the vehicles collided and a passenger in the backseat of the Chevy died, Pye said.
The Fairfield County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the deceased passenger.
Both the Chevy driver and a front seat passenger were taken to an area hospital, according to Pye. The Ford driver was the only person in the van and was also taken to an area hospital, Pye said.
No further information on the condition of the surviving victims was available.
No other injuries were reported.
It is not known whether the people involved in the accident were wearing seat belts.
Information about the cause of the collision between the vehicles was not available, but the wreck remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.
At least 723 people had died on South Carolina roadways through Oct. 6, 2024, according to the Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in accidents in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 10 people have died in crashes in Fairfield County in 2024, according to DPS data. There were 15 deaths reported in the county in 2023, DPS said.
