Optimist Club organizes blood drive, health fair and car seat inspection

June 7 – A local nonprofit is hosting a health fair this Saturday to offer free screenings and checkups.

The Duncan Optimist Club will host the health fair at Faith Church on Saturday, June 8 from 9am to 2pm, in addition to the community blood drive.

Ray Christian, president of the Duncan Optimist Club, said the Carter County Health Department will be in attendance along with the Stephens County Health Department.

“They will do breast screening for women and there will be privacy areas,” he said. “Free hearing tests will be provided.”

Other checkpoints include skin care checks from the cancer center.

Christian said there will be opportunities for children over the age of one to undergo various tests. He said they will also offer free sports physicals.

In addition to the health fair, Christian said they will be hosting Safe Kids Car Seat from 10 a.m. to noon.

About two months ago, Christian said they gave away thirteen car seats.

With several still on the list wanting to receive a car seat, he said they are expected to have about 20 to 25 car seats from Oklahoma City on Saturday.

For a car seat check, families can learn how to install a car seat or booster seat for a child and whether it is time to renew the seat.

Some rules apply to receiving a car seat, such as an expectant mother must be within six weeks of giving birth, a caregiver must be the child’s legal guardian, and a child must be present.

Discounted car seats are available for $15 for eligible families and discounted car seats require proof of government assistance.

Wichita Mountains Prevention Network will be at the health fair.

The event may be canceled due to bad weather.

Faith Church is located at 1404 W. Main Street, Duncan.
