Organizers of the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles announced several updates on Friday, including venue changes and major improvements to existing venues where various competitions will be held.

The Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Organizing Committee, known as LA28, called the venue changes “the first set of updates to the venue plan.”

One of the big changes is the construction of a temporary swimming pool at Ingelwood’s SoFi Stadium, home of the Los Angeles Chargers and Los Angeles Rams. This will move swimming from a temporary pool on the USC baseball field to a temporary pool in the SoFi Stadium.

Organizers say moving the swim to SoFi could generate an additional $106 million in revenue, with its luxury suites, restaurants and estimated capacity of 38,000.

The original site plan for the 2028 Summer Olympics was submitted to the City of Los Angeles in January 2017, and the updated reconfiguration includes moving outside the City of Los Angeles to use existing stadiums rather than building temporary venues, which will save money.

“Since 2017, the venue landscape in Los Angeles has changed, with new professional sports stadiums built or under construction, and previously allocated sites no longer available for use in 2028,” organizers wrote.

Organizers also said new sports have been added to the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic sports programmes.

LA28’s master plan:

  • Gymnastics will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in downtown Los Angeles
  • Basketball will be held at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood
  • Swimming moves from building a temporary location at USC’s baseball field to a temporary pool at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood
  • Athletics And Para-athletics will remain at the LA Memorial Coliseum, making it the only stadium in history to host track and field competitions at three Olympic Games.
  • To dive John C. Argue Swim Stadium at Exposition Park
  • Artistic swimming And Para swimming competitions will be hosted by the City of Long Beach, in addition to several other sports to be announced at a later date.
  • The San Fernando Valley will host high-energy Olympic competitions BMX free style And BMX racingtogether with Skateboard park And Street, all in the Sepulveda Basin area.
  • The Sepulveda Basin area will also play host Archeryfor both the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
  • Rider And Para Equestrian competitions, previously assigned to the Sepulveda Dam Recreation Area, will be held at an existing facility in Temecula
  • To shoot And Shooting parasport competitionswhich were also previously assigned to the Sepulveda Dam Recreation Area, will be assigned to one of two possible sport shooting clubs, to be determined, in the Southern California region.
  • Canoe slalom And softball moves to existing world-class locations in Oklahoma City
  • Opening and closing ceremonies remain unchanged, with segments hosted at both the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and Inglewood Stadium.

“LA28’s updated venue plan will provide the ideal Hollywood stage for the world’s top athletes, and choosing from spectacular existing venues, wherever they are located, rather than building new permanent or temporary stadiums, will deliver more than $150 million in savings and new revenues to help maintain a balanced budget,” said LA28 Chairman and President Casey Wasserman.
