Oververt challenge honoring the local bond with Thrasher Magazine’s iconic photo held Sunday

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Skaters from all over the country came to Get-A-Way Skate Park on Sunday as part of the Oververt Challenge.

The challenge was inspired by an iconic Thrasher magazine photo showing Huntsville’s Pat Wachter shredding at the original Get-A-Way Skate Park. Wachter was present and watched as skaters tried to replicate his gnarled photo.

“I just thought it was nice that the city of Huntsville and Paul Ledbetter and Paul Gierow would put on an event to repeat this history,” Wachter said. “We guarantee that someone will do it again today, even bigger than when I did it.”

The original photo was taken in August 1980 and featured at the Thrasher in February 1981. It has become one of the most iconic photos in Alabama skating history.

Wachter remembers the trick and the day the photo was taken.

“I worked on it for a long time to get there and grind it out. That shot in Thrasher magazine was taken in August 1980 by a photographer named Tom Ledbetter,” Wachter said. “It became the most iconic photo in Alabama skateboarding and is quite famous around the world.”
