Ocean Winds (OW) and Eletrobras have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in São Paulo to explore offshore wind energy opportunities in Brazil.
The two companies will work together to promote offshore wind energy projects, in line with Brazil’s sustainable energy and economic development goals.
OW Chief Business Development Officer Rafael Munilla stated: “We look forward to building a long-term relationship with Eletrobras to help Brazil tap into its natural wind energy resources for a sustainable energy future, while also promoting local employment and community development. ”
OW, a 50/50 joint venture between EDP Renewables (EDPR) and ENGIE, has identified Brazil as a key market due to its significant potential to meet increasing long-term demand for renewable energy.
The country’s commitment to energy transition and creating opportunities for local supply chains and communities were the other driving factors.
The partnership between OW and Eletrobras will strengthen Brazil’s energy goals and promote sustainable development and economic growth.
Leonardo Soares Walter, M&A and Business Development Director of Eletrobras, said: “Eletrobras is committed to properly allocating its capital through the development of clean energy projects, contributing to the energy transition in Brazil and around the world.
“Today, 97% of the energy generated by the company already comes from clean and renewable sources, and we will quickly reach 100% through the sale of thermal power plants currently underway. The company has also set itself the target of being net zero by 2030, always striving towards a more sustainable future.
“The agreement signed with Ocean Winds allows the development of a strategic partnership, which will contribute to ensuring that generation resources in Brazil and the world become increasingly clean and renewed, guaranteeing the decarbonization of the economy with energy security.”
EDPR and ENGIE are integrating their offshore wind assets and project pipeline under OW, starting with 1.5 GW under construction and 4 GW under development.
By 2025, OW plans to reach between 5 and 7 GW of projects in operation or construction, and between 5 and 10 GW in advanced development.
OW’s primary target markets include Europe, the US and select Asian countries, where most of the growth is expected.
