ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. — A painting of Kristina Folkerts takes center stage at St. Louis Park’s Park Tavern.
“She always had a smile on her face, great personality, lit up a room,” said Park Tavern manager Cheryl Gallagher Watson. “Great colleague, great friend, daughter, wife, mother. All of the above.”
Although Folkerts may not be physically there, her presence is felt everywhere – especially on Mondays.
“This is a fundraiser, but it’s also a celebration. A celebration of Kristina’s life, and Gabe’s life. And it’s also a celebration of the community,” said Phil Weber, owner of Park Tavern.
Folkerts, a server at Park Tavern, was killed a suspected drunk driver was knocked into the restaurant patio. Gabe Harvey, a nurse at Methodist Hospital, was also killed. Nine others were injured in the crash.
“It’s just not fair,” Weber said. “You shouldn’t have to grow up without your parents, so it just felt like the right thing to do. There wasn’t even a question or second thought about it.”
From donations to bids and more, those associated with the Tavern continue to show up.
“When we heard about the tragic event, we thought we wanted to get involved and help,” Mike Monson said.
Monson’s office was one of many businesses that donated an item for the silent auction. Prizes range from hotel stays to clothing and remote-controlled coolers. In addition to a silent auction, there will be hourly prizes drawn, free bowling, karaoke and specials all day.
“I think it’s important to show up today and support the team that works here,” Brooke Hennessey said.
The Park Tavern staff tells WCCO they are forever changed and devastated by what happened, but they will move on – in memory.
“It was great,” said Gallagher Watson. “It was overwhelming. We’re really lucky. It’s a very strong community.”
