Maui County officials said a bus driver and all passengers on a county bus were able to get off safely Wednesday after its rear tires fell into a sinkhole in Kahului.
The bus was stuck at a slightly upward angle, but everyone on board exited the Maui Bus around 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, with no injuries reported, according to the County of Maui Department of Transportation.
The driver of the Maui Bus navigated through the puddles of water before the rear tires became stuck in the sinkhole on Lono Avenue near West Kamehameha Avenue. At the time, officials said the sinkhole was small and hidden by the water.
The area remains closed, officials said, while remaining road repairs are bid on.
Officials said by late evening the hole had grown to about 15 feet by 30 feet and 5 feet deep due to water pressure and digging.
The Maui County Department of Water Supply said the sinkhole was caused by an aged 12-inch water main break, and that a portion of Lono Avenue was closed from approximately 3:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. and water in the area was turned off from 3:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.

DWS has now repaired the water line.
D&D Towing recovered the bus from the hole and is now at Robert Hawaii’s base where it will undergo minor repairs before returning to service.
“DWS officials encourage motorists to avoid driving through puddles of water during flooding, water outages and other infrastructure incidents,” the department said in a news release.
