PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Some scattered showers and storms continued into Sunday morning across the Delaware Valley, while South Jersey and coastal points were hit with heavy and possibly flooding rain early in the day.
Some patchy fog could develop across the area this morning, especially along the coast where warmer air will be crossing over much cooler ocean waters, which will be in the 50s and 60s. Skies will be mostly cloudy with afternoon breaks of sunshine and highs in the 90s, accompanied by a wind chill of 100-103 degrees.
More severe storms are possible on Sunday evening
The expected heat has activated a heat advisory for all areas adjacent to the I-95 corridor, including Philadelphia, Wilmington, Delaware and Trenton, New Jersey, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
CBS Philadelphia
Due to the extreme heat and the chance of more severe weather on Sunday night, we have declared Sunday as the NEXT Weather Alert Day.
Scattered showers and strong to severe storms will develop again Sunday afternoon and evening in the Delaware Valley ahead of a cold front. Our entire area is at a low risk for severe weather, or Level 2 on a five-point scale.
CBS Philadelphia
The main threats are damaging winds, heavy rainfall with possible flash flooding and large hail. While the chance of a tornado developing remains low, we cannot completely rule out the possibility.
CBS Philadelphia
The first line of storms looks set to move across the Philadelphia area between 2 and 3 p.m., but more storms will develop in the afternoon. Severe weather is expected to continue between 3 and 5 p.m., possibly extending into 7 p.m. in some areas.
