“If you look at this holiday season, there are about 3 billion pounds of pumpkins that actually end up in landfills,” said Fox Chase Farm Administrator Dr. Mandy Manna.
Students from the Philadelphia School District took on the challenge to help reduce that waste. The goal was to encourage others not to throw away their discarded pumpkins and instead recycle them – and have fun while doing so.
Manna worked with engineering students from the Science Leadership Academy in Beeber.
“The challenge was creating a pumpkin launcher to be able to launch pumpkins for composting,” Manna said.
The students worked on this project for a month making various pumpkin launchers of all shapes and sizes. Now they’re ready for you to get rid of your old Halloween pumpkins in style and launch them across a field like a deep ball from Jalen Hurts to AJ Brown or DeVonta Smith.
The farm is hosting an event on Saturday where you can use these launchers. The pumpkin remains are then used for compost and become nutrients for the soil.
The event starts on Saturday from 9am to 2pm at Fox Chase Farm, 8500 Pine Road, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
