A man was fatally shot by Phoenix police officers near 79e Avenue and Mitchell Drive in west Phoenix on Thursday evening.
Around 10:30 p.m., officers received a call about a person possibly armed and harassing another near 83rd Avenue and McDowell, Phoenix police said in a news release. The caller told officers they were following a vehicle the suspect was driving.
Police officers found the vehicle and attempted to pull it over, but the driver took off, the news release said. The department used air support to track the vehicle to the area of 79th Avenue and Mitchell Drive.
The driver then fled the car and drove into the backyard, police said.
An officer spotted a man matching the driver’s description and “was seen holding a gun in his hand and raising it,” the news release said. The officer then shot the man.
Phoenix police said the man was shot once and died from his injuries at the scene, despite officers’ attempts to provide life-saving measures.
Officials warned that the area would be closed off while detectives investigated the situation. No further details were available Friday morning, including the identity of the man shot.
