Plane carrying 62 people crashes in fiery crash in Brazilian state of Sao Paulo

SAO PAULO (AP) — A plane carrying 62 people went up in flames Friday in a residential area of a city in Brazil’s Sao Paulo state, the airline said, but it was not yet clear how many people were injured or killed.

Airline VoePass confirmed in a statement that a plane bound for Sao Paulo’s Guarulhos International Airport crashed in the city of Vinhedo with 58 passengers and four crew members on board. The statement did not say what caused the accident.

At an event in southern Brazil, the president said Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva asked the crowd to stand and observe a minute of silence as he shared the news. He said it appeared that all passengers and crew on board had died, without explaining how that information had been obtained.

Firefighters, military police and civil protection sent teams to the crash site in Vinhedo.

Brazilian television network GloboNews showed footage of a large burning area and smoke coming from what appeared to be an airplane fuselage in a residential area full of homes. Additional footage on GloboNews showed a plane drifting vertically downward as it spiraled.
