Plane crashes near Midlands golf course, South Carolina sheriff says

A plane crashed in the Midlands region of South Carolina on Sunday, according to the Saluda County Sheriff’s Office.

Both occupants of the two-seater plane were airlifted to a hospital, the sheriff’s office said in a news release. No further information about their conditions was available.

A spokesperson for the Saluda County coroner told The State that their office was not asked to go to the crash site or the hospital.

According to the press release, the plane crashed in the area between the Persimmon Hill Golf Course and the Saluda County Airport.

Information about the cause of the crash was not available, but the sheriff’s office said it is being investigated by the FAA. There was no word if the National Transportation Safety Board was also investigating the crash.

Information about where and when the plane departed, as well as its intended destination, was not available.

In addition to the sheriff’s office, both EMS and Saluda County Fire Departments responded to the crash.

Minutes after the crash, firefighters were dispatched to an unrelated fire on the other side of the county because high temperatures and humidity made conditions “a tinderbox,” the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office said.

This is a story that is still developing. Check back later for updates.
