Tadej Pogacar reclaimed the yellow leader’s jersey in thrilling fashion by winning the fourth stage of the Tour de France.

With this being the first major mountain stage of this year’s Tour, general classification contenders feared that UAE Team Emirates would send a signal in their bid to retake the title from Jonas Vingegaard and Visma–Lease a Bike.

And so they did as the race moved from Italy to France. The day’s leader, Richard Carapaz, was quickly dropped back when they attacked just above the gruelling climb of the Col du Galibier.

Two-time champion Pogacar then extended his lead on the nearly 19km descent to the finish in Valloire, winning by 35 seconds over Remco Evenepoel. Vingegaard crossed the finish line in fifth place two seconds later.

The 25-year-old Slovenian Pogacar now has a 45-second lead over Evenepoel in the general classification, while Vingegaard is five seconds further back in third place.
