Police announce the fourth death in a shooting at an Arkansas supermarket

A fourth victim in a shooting at an Arkansas supermarket was killed Saturday evening, state police announced.

Police identified the deceased as Ellen Shrum, 81.

Several others were injured in the shooting that happened just after 11:30 a.m. Friday, both inside and outside the Mad Butcher supermarket in Fordyce, a city about 70 miles (110 kilometers) south of Little Rock.

Thirteen people were affected in the shooting, including two law enforcement officers, Arkansas State Police said. None of the four deceased victims are police officers.

The three others who were killed were previously identified by police and family members as Callie Weems, 23; Roy Sturgis, 50; and Shirley Taylor, 62.

Seven other civilians – five women and two men, ranging in age from 20 to 65 years old – survived their injuries, police said Saturday evening. Four of those seven are still in hospital, including one woman who is in critical condition.

A Fordyce police officer, James Johnson, 31, was released from a Little Rock hospital Saturday morning, police said. He was treated for a gunshot wound.

The other injured officer, John Hudson, 24, of the Stuttgart police, suffered minor injuries, police said.

The suspect, 44-year-old Travis Eugene Posey, who police say will be charged with four counts of capital murder, was also injured in an exchange of gunfire with police. Other charges are pending.

After receiving treatment for his wounds, which police said were not life-threatening, the suspect was taken into custody by Arkansas State Police and booked into the Ouachita County Detention Center.

It was not clear whether Posey has an attorney, and the public defender’s office for Dallas County, Arkansas, did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent Friday. Attempts to reach possible relatives by telephone were unsuccessful.

Police have not yet established a motive. Law enforcement officials briefed on the shooting told NBC News on Saturday that there is no evidence of any form of extremism as a possible motive.

Witnesses recounted the horror, with some saying the gunfire first started in the supermarket parking lot. A meat cutter who works at Mad Butcher said he heard gunshots and glass breaking at the back of the store and managed to escape through the back door.
