June 20 – CASSOPOLIS, Mich. – The Cass County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind community members that law enforcement agencies will not be calling to request payments through money transfer locations.
Cass County Undersheriff Clinton Roach issued a news release Thursday afternoon stating that the department has received several calls over the past 24 hours from citizens claiming to have spoken to a “Lieutenant Justin O’Brien” who told them they had either missed jury duty . or an order had been issued requiring payment to settle the matter.
The department noted that in all cases the person used area code 269, the area code for southwest Michigan.
“The Cass County Sheriff’s Office does not contact Cass County residents by telephone to demand money or threaten to arrest individuals who do not pay,” the news release said. “Additionally, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office and the Cass County Court do not request or accept payments originating from money transfer locations such as Walmart, Walgreens, Meijer, Western Union, etc.”
The department has reminded anyone who feels a call is a scam to contact local law enforcement to verify.
