Police arrest a man who killed his neighbor and injured a pit bull in a brutal stabbing in Brooklyn

A Brooklyn man has been charged with killing his 37-year-old neighbor and wounding a pit bull in a frenzied stabbing spree, police and sources said Sunday.

Anthony Fabato, 37, was arrested and charged with murder, robbery and aggravated cruelty to animals in the bloody murder of Thomas Machalchick.

Police were called to the building on Sands St. near Jay St. in downtown Brooklyn just after 8 a.m. Friday and found the victim on the 28th floor with a stab wound to his torso and a pit bull suffering from multiple knife wounds, officers and sources said.

Meanwhile, the assailant and his girlfriend ran to another apartment in the building, which provides long-term housing for formerly homeless people, and locked themselves inside, barricading the door, the Daily News previously reported.

Shortly after police arrived, the couple surrendered and were arrested.

Medics rushed Machalchick to New York Presbyterian-Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, but he could not be saved.

The injured dog was taken to a local animal hospital in stable condition, police said.
