Police find drugs in a hidden dashboard compartment

June 26 – A Michigan man with several previous arrests in Monongalia County was taken into custody Wednesday on drug charges.

While on patrol, Officer CJ Behm of the Morgantown Police Department spotted a Chrysler minivan with an Illinois license plate that was believed to have been involved in a June 24 collision. According to Behm’s statement, the bus was parked on High Street with a black man, later identified as Deante Bernard Hurt, 27, of Detroit, next to the vehicle.

As Behm approached the bus, Hurt climbed behind the wheel and began driving away. However, he parked the car as soon as Behm stopped him.

The officer said that while Hurt was parking the vehicle, he could be seen accessing the vehicle’s dashboard by removing the ventilation and dashboard controls. Behm added that Hurt also gained many additional seats in the car.

While speaking with Hurt, Behm said he smelled marijuana and saw several plastic baggies sticking out of Hurt’s right pocket.

After being removed from the vehicle and advised of his Miranda rights, Hurt allegedly admitted to having a marijuana butter, which was removed from his possession.

A subsequent search of Hurt’s vehicle found approximately 84.7 grams of a substance that tested positive for fentanyl in the dashboard area where Hurt had previously been seen accessing.

According to Behm’s report, police also found a magnetic storage box under the vehicle in the van.

Hurt was arrested for possession with intent to deliver fentanyl. He is being held at the North Central Regional Jail on a $50,000 bond.

This isn’t the first time Hurt has faced drug-related charges in Monongalia County.

In December 2023, Hurt was charged with four counts of possession with intent and conspiracy to deliver a controlled substance.

In March, he was again charged with two counts of possession with intent to deliver controlled substances. He was released after posting $100,000 bail in both cases.
