Nov. 21 – Elkhart police have named Charles Bell Jr., 26, of Elkhart, as a suspect in connection with a stabbing Monday evening.

Police said officers contacted a 49-year-old man who had been stabbed in the 1200 block of South Main Street in Elkhart at 5:22 p.m.

During the investigation, officers located Bell, 26, in the 1300 block of Eden Street and took him into custody at approximately 5:28 p.m.

Medics took the victim to the hospital for evaluation and treatment of potentially life-threatening injuries. The victim reported to police that he knew Bell and claimed he stabbed him and took his backpack.

Bell was arrested and booked into the Elkhart County Jail on preliminary charges of Robbery with Great Bodily Injury, a Level 2 Felony; aggravated battery, a level 3 felony; and resisting law enforcement, a class A misdemeanor. His bond is $150,000.

A five-car pileup in Goshen

Five vehicles were involved in a pileup on US 33, just south of Bashor Road, on Wednesday at 6:01 p.m.

Goshen police reported that Juan Pineda Fuentes, 36, of Goshen, was driving northwest on US 33 in a 2017 Chevrolet Traverse and was struck from behind by a 1997 Chevrolet Astro Van driven by Jose Lariz Villalpondo, 58, of Goshen, leading to the pile. upwards.

Villalpondo told police he was waiting at a stoplight when his vehicle was struck from behind and the impact pushed his vehicle into another vehicle.

Villalpondo was trapped in his vehicle and required medical attention. He was taken to Elkhart General Hospital. Inciarte was also transported to Goshen Hospital for possible whiplash.

Fuentes was cited for driving a vehicle while never obtaining a driver’s license and having no insurance on the vehicle he was driving.

Attempt to avoid a crash goes wrong

A teenager was hospitalized after a single-vehicle crash on Wednesday evening.

Goshen police say Joseph Cassell, 48, of Goshen, was driving south on Main Street Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. and another vehicle attempted to make a U-turn at the overpass near Prospect Avenue.

Cassell told police the other vehicle was turning too fast and he couldn’t stop, so he took evasive action and jumped around the bend to drive around the other vehicle.

Cassell was uninjured, but his passenger, 17-year-old Lilly Cassell, was taken to the hospital for abdominal pain.

Elkhart County deputies report that Andrew Lengacher, 22, of Goshen, was driving west on CR 18 at 5:56 p.m., waiting to turn left onto CR 23 in a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado and allegedly failed to yield, causing him to crashed into a 2011 Toyota Prius driven by Madison Coleman, 24, of Goshen, who was traveling straight on C.R. 18.

ARRESTS

A 33-year-old woman was arrested by Goshen police at 7:49 a.m. Wednesday on a charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated after she was stopped for a traffic violation near the intersection of North Indiana Avenue and West Lincoln Avenue.
