Police shoot man dead in Massapequa after chase from NYC to Long Island, official says

MASSAPEQUA, NY — Police on Long Island shot and killed a man after he led officers on a chase that began in New York City, injuring several people, authorities said.

Late Friday night in Queens, NYPD officers attempted to detain the man, but he sped away and continued to elude police until he was apprehended in Massapequa, Nassau County Police Chief Patrick Ryder said.

Driver tried to ram NYPD officers during getaway

The man tried to ram two NYPD officers as he fled, ultimately injuring officers and a civilian during the chase, Ryder said. a press conference Saturday.

“NYPD put out the call over the air that they were headed toward Nassau County. We got into a conversation with that vehicle somewhere near Merrick on Sunrise Highway. At that point, the officers had the individual boxed in. The individual decided he wasn’t going to stop. He continued to run, drove off with two of our police cars, two of our officers attempted to run them over. They dodged out of the way and that vehicle sped off again,” Ryder said.

The pursuit continued as the driver continued onto Sunrise Highway.

“He hit another police car on Sunrise Highway, then he flipped over and drove the wrong way on Sunrise Highway, then he got back into the lane and hit a civilian car. That civilian is now in the hospital and is being treated,” Ryder said.

Man refused to comply with officers before fatal shooting, police say

The man reached Hicksville Road and Sunrise Highway in Massapequa, where officers attempted to arrest him, according to Ryder.

“Officers got out of their car to take control and arrest the individual. The individual did not do so. A shooting occurred and the individual died,” Ryder said.

Police said they were waiting until they had notified the man’s family before releasing his name.

Two NYPD officers were injured. Five Nassau County officers were taken to the hospital; three suffered minor injuries, we were told.

The New York Attorney General’s Office is investigating police-involved shootings, as is standard practice.
