The day has come. Tuesday, November 5 is election day in the US and eyes are on Michigan as a swing state in the presidential race. Meanwhile, Democrats are fighting to maintain a razor-thin majority in the state House, playing other important roles of representation locally and in DC, and the races at the bottom of the ballot will decide leadership on education and justice.
Here are the latest updates from Michigan on Election Day 2024:
7 a.m.: Polls are open in (most of) Michigan
Polls are open today in Michigan from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. local time. Four counties in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula are on central time, while the rest of the state is on eastern time.
If you are in line at 8 p.m., you must stay in line and you have the right to vote.
Michigan’s Biggest Elections of 2024
The presidential race is looming across the country, but is especially close in Michigan, one of the seven key swing states this cycle. The polls in Michigan are so close that it is impossible to predict the outcome. And that’s not the only exciting match.
The battle for the US Senate in Michigan between Democrat Elissa Slotkin and Republican Mike Rogers is proving difficult, with the open seat seen as an important prize for both parties.
There are also three ultra-competitive congressional races. The 7e and 8e Congressional districts near Lansing and Saginaw, respectively, have open seats. In the 10e Congressional District, it is a rematch between incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. John James and Democrat Carl Marlinga, who lost the district by about half a percentage point last cycle.
