Port of Seattle approves 10-year agreement with Carnival for sustainable cruises

On June 25, the Port of Seattle and Carnival Corporation agreed to a 10-year plan to advance the region’s zero emissions sustainability goal, economic development opportunities and economic impact of the cruise industry.

The 10-year plan builds on the existing relationship between the Port of Seattle and Carnival.

Elements of the agreement include:

  • Approximately $186 million in annual revenue and at least 550,000 passengers

  • The port’s shore power targets for 2027 must be achieved so that all berths are equipped with electrical sockets by 2027.

  • Collaboration in the development of alternative fuels for the cruise industry

  • Develop a local purchasing program that supports small, diverse, disadvantaged, local and tribal suppliers

  • Carnival Corporation’s cruise lines (Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line and Cunard) are promoting overnight stays in Seattle that will have an economic impact on the region

  • Supporting educational programs and workforce development of the region’s maritime workforce

“This long-term agreement provides economic security for the port and local businesses that rely on cruises, while strengthening our partnership,” said Steve Metruck, executive director of the Port of Seattle. “Carnival Corporation has been a valuable partner for continued innovation in environmental sustainability and expanding economic opportunity.

The Port of Seattle was the first port in North America to offer shore power to two cruise ships.

Carnival Corporation’s brands account for nearly half of all port cruise visits.
