Portsmouth couple wakes up to find car damaged in shooting

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Portsmouth police responded to a shots fired call early Friday morning and while no one was injured, one car was heavily damaged.

A woman identified as Jessica said she woke up to the shots early this morning, but it wasn’t until a few hours later that she and her husband realized one of the shots had hit their car.

She said this wasn’t the first shooting in front of their home, near the intersection of Winchester Drive and Loudoun Avenue, since they moved there in 2016.

Around 2:30 a.m. they heard gunfire and looked outside to see if everyone was okay. When they saw no one, they went back to sleep.

She said her husband had to leave for work early and when he got out of the car, he noticed something was wrong.

“Gets in the car, tries to defrost the windshield and notices the wiper blade at the back is clicking, and he looks back and there’s a grindstone in the window so when he gets out he notices there were police cars and officers. He talked to some neighbors, so he called the officer and showed him the damage.”

She said the officer told her husband their car wasn’t the only one that was hit. She said officers remained at the scene for a while Thursday evening and collected evidence.
