Possible tornado strikes as storms rip through Canyon County

A “local disaster emergency” was issued in Canyon County after a severe thunderstorm moved through the region on Wednesday.

A possible tornado touched down near Parma within the emergency radius, which starts at Pearl Road and U.S. Highway 95, and goes north to the Payette County line, according to Aaron Williams, director of Canyon County Constituent Services.

The storm toppled trees along the road, caused a power outage and damaged barns and outbuildings, Williams said. One person reportedly suffered a broken arm, but no further serious injuries or deaths were reported.

“Declaring this an emergency will allow additional resources to be used to serve the area impacted by the severe weather,” a Canyon County news release said. “This opens up an opportunity to reimburse burdening districts that provide support in the area for potential unexpected costs.”

The National Weather Service in Boise issued a severe thunderstorm warning earlier Wednesday for 19 Idaho counties, including Canyon and Payette. A spokesperson for the agency said it had not received any reports of a tornado but was investigating the extreme weather in Canyon County.
