Democrats in A New York Congressional District will decide Tuesday in a historically expensive primary race, as Republican voters in Utah make their first choice in the reliably red state to replace retiring Republican Senator Mitt Romney.
Incumbent progressive in New York is in danger of losing a seat
Progressive Democratic New York Rep. Jamaal Bowman is facing a tough primary challenge from Westchester County Executive George Latimer. International affairs defined the campaign, along with Bowman’s criticism of Israel as a member of the progressive ‘Squad’ in the US House of Representatives, which underlined the major differences within the Democratic party.
According to data from AdImpact, Bowman has been targeted with more than $14 million in outside ad spending in opposition to his latest campaign from the United Democracy Project, a Super PAC associated with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.
Before the primary election, AdImpact also posted a message social media that the race for Bowman’s seat, which has resulted in more than $24 million in ad spending to date, has been the most expensive House primary ever.
The race to replace Mitt Romney
Republicans in Utah also will vote Tuesday to elect a Republican candidate in the race to replace the resignation Senator Mitt Romney. Although Romney represented the reliably red state, he was one of former President Donald Trump’s fiercest Republican critics.
Trump has sided with Riverton Mayor Trent Staggs during Tuesday’s primary. Romney’s old seat is not expected to be competitive in the November general election, yet Trump’s influence in the state has not been as strong as in other similarly conservative parts of the country. Other contenders looking to replace Romney and defeat Staggs on Tuesday include Republican Rep. John Curtis and Brad Wilson, the former speaker of the Utah House.
Boebert is trying to win the primaries in several Colorado districts
Following her re-election to Congress in a surprisingly close 2022 midterm race, GOP Rep. Lauren Boebert decided she would advance this cycle for what is expected to be a more Republican-friendly seat in the U.S. House.
Boeberta controversial member of the Republican conference, is running Tuesday in a six-person Republican primary for Colorado’s 4th Congressional District, where Representative Ken Buck resigned earlier this year.
The GOP primary race for Boebert’s old district
Six Republicans are also running for the congressional seat Boebert is leaving behind. Among the candidates is former Republican state Rep. Ron Hanks, who has spoken about his presence outside the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, but has said he did not enter the building.
The Colorado contest is notable for how close the general election margin was during the election Midterm exams 2022, where Boebert narrowly defeated Democrat Adam Frisch by just 546 votes. Frisch is running for the same seat again this cycle.
South Carolina Republican Party Congressional Primary Elections
The race for the Republican nomination in South Carolina’s 3rd Congressional District is down to two candidates in the June 25 runoff: Trump-backed candidate Mark Burns faces fellow Republican Sheri Biggs. Biggs has been endorsed by South Carolina Republican Gov. Henry McMaster.
