With just over a month to go until the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, the United States is again predicted to win the most medals, with Team GB set to surpass 60 medals for the fourth consecutive Summer Games.

To mark the 30 days left, sports data company Gracenote has released its latest virtual medal, based on results data from key competitions since the last Tokyo Olympics. It predicts that Britain will come in third place, behind the US, and fellow sporting powerhouse China.

The Games start on Friday, July 26 in Paris. View the full day-by-day schedule to identify the key events for Team GB. Telegraph Sport has also published a guide to the British athletes selected so far to compete in this summer’s Games.

Who is expected to win the most medals and the most gold?

It will come as no surprise that the United States is expected to win the most medals (123) again in Paris.

China is predicted to come in second in total medal count, but will win just one gold less than the United States. A total of 87 medals would be two less than the total three years ago in Tokyo.

Britain is also predicted to be on course to achieve a similar medal tally to the last Olympics, although the number of gold medals will decline.

France is expected to enjoy the usual favourable development of the host nation and will rise sharply in the medal tally, to fourth place and third behind the United States and China in terms of gold medals.

Australia is expected to complete the top five with 48 medals, the highest medal tally for the country in 20 years, since Athens 2004.

With athletes from Russia and Belarus banned from competing internationally in almost all Olympic sports since February 2022, due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, it is more difficult to accurately predict how individuals selected to act as individual neutral athletes to compete in Paris, will do it in terms of medals. Because only individuals are allowed to compete as neutral participants, and not team events, it is expected that medals won will be limited.

Athletes from Ukraine saw their Olympic Games preparations severely disrupted by the ongoing conflict, but are expected to win a total of two golds and 17 medals.

Team GB medal predictions for Paris

Team GB athletes are predicted to win a total of 62 medals, maintaining their position as top contenders since hosting in 2012. The success has been built on spreading the medals across the sports, and this will continue in Paris.

However, they are predicted to drop down the gold medal table, with fourteen gold medals, eight fewer than three years ago. Team GB’s best overseas score is 67 at Rio 2016, with Paris expected to surrender five fewer medals at 62, two fewer than Tokyo.

How many medals did Team GB win at the last Olympic Games?

It was the first time since 1996 that Great Britain had failed to win a gold medal in athletics, with the men’s 4x100m relay team beaten by 0.01 seconds, although they were later stripped of their silver after a failed doping test by CJ Ujah.

Who won the most medals at the 2020 Olympics?

The United States also topped the Olympic medal table in Tokyo 2020, with 113 medals, including 39 gold, 41 silver and 33 bronze. Swimmer Caeleb Dressel was the top medalist for the US with five gold medals in the pool. The country also set an Olympic record in Tokyo by winning medals in 29 different sports.
