Protesters gather ahead of the Scotland-Israel match

Protesters have gathered outside Hampden ahead of Scotland’s Women’s Euro 2025 qualifier against Israel, due to the country’s military operation in Gaza.

About 150 people carrying small coffins and Palestinian flags stood at the doors of the main stand before kick-off.

A handful of counter-protesters also demonstrated before the match, which is being played behind closed doors without fans in attendance due to security concerns over “planned disruptions”.

The match in group B2 starts at 7:05 PM.

Last week the SFA said there was “no choice” but to ban supporters from taking part “after extensive security consultations with all major parties”.

Public demonstrations against Israel’s military operation in Gaza take place regularly across Britain.

One group – the Gaza Genocide Emergency Committee – organized a pre-match protest in Hampden calling for the matches to be cancelled.

Police Scotland said: “Appropriate policing plans are in place to maintain public safety and minimize any disruption to the community.”

Israel has banned Israel from organizing football matches on security grounds in the wake of the October 7 Hamas attack and the Israeli government’s military response.

Instead, the Israeli national team and its club teams have played matches at neutral venues in Hungary.

Tuesday’s second leg between Scotland and Israel in Budapest will also be played behind closed doors.
