PRT is proposing a major overhaul of bus routes

It’s been more than a decade since Pittsburgh Regional Transit redesigned its bus network — until now.

On Monday, PRT unveiled the first draft of its “Bus Line Redesign,” an overhaul of bus routes.

The aim is to make better use of bus routes and get passengers to their destinations with fewer stops – while covering as much area as possible.

According to PRT, the changes will connect cyclists to more jobs, hospitals, shops and supermarket centres.

In addition, some routes will no longer have a downtown stop for transfers, which is an issue Channel 11 has highlighted in recent years.

That includes Oakland and the airport. PRT hopes to have single-seat rides, meaning you don’t have to get on one bus and then another to reach your destination.

Channel 11 previously reported that a rapid bus system to the airport is preferable to a T due to cost.

This is just a concept and PRT encourages riders to weigh in. Click here for more information.

The PRT hopes to have a final plan by next spring and implement the changes in 2026.
