A puppy abused by a man at a Buddhist pilgrimage site in China has been adopted after a video of the incident sparked outrage on local social media earlier this month.
-
What happened: The abuse took place at Dailuo Peak on Mount Wutai in Shanxi Province. The video shows the puppy imitating visitors by climbing parts of the 1,080-step staircase and bowing to pray at each step. Then a man believed to be the puppy’s owner appears and begins pushing and kicking the dog in an apparent attempt to get him to go home, causing the puppy to fall down the stairs. Douyin users criticized the man in the video, with one writing: “You may not like them but please don’t hurt them!” Another commented, “What is the use of prayer without a good heart?”

To the rescue: A hospital owner from China’s Tianjin Municipality surnamed Cui, who saw the video, reportedly drove 400 kilometers (248 miles) to the site on November 12 to rescue the puppy after paying the alleged owner 300 yuan ($42). Another woman, a Douyin user named Yueyue, contacted Cui shortly afterwards and said she wanted to adopt the puppy. The latter traveled from Shenyang, Liaoning province, to Tianjin on November 15 to pick up the puppy, which she named ‘Luoyi’ – ‘luo’ is the name of the temple and ‘yi’ means ‘conversion to Buddhism’ – on November 15.
