Putin visits Belarus for the second time since the start of his new term

Russian President Vladimir Putin travels to Belarus for a two-day state visit.

Putin will meet his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko Thursday evening for discussions on important international issues, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

The two countries are close allies and Minsk has supported Russia’s invasion of Ukraine without directly participating in the conflict.

Lukashenko last visited Moscow on May 9 for Russia’s Victory Day military parade. His country is heavily dependent on Russia for economic, political and diplomatic support.

It will be Putin’s second trip abroad since his inauguration for a fifth term in early May, after visiting China last week.

Earlier on Thursday, Putin received Bahraini King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa in Moscow, a Kremlin statement said.
