Raging wildfire scorches 400 acres in Lynn Woods

A raging bushfire in Lynn Woods has quadrupled in size this weekend, destroying more than 400 hectares.

The fast-moving fire line has burned from Steel Tower to Stone Tower, over Dungeon Rock, Undercliff Path and across Waycross Road to the Pennybrook Road entrance.

Fire officials said the flames were under control Sunday evening, but warned that could change due to the dry conditions.

Trees have fallen on multiple fire roads and trails, and hundreds are still burning.

“It is impossible to stop this because of how dry the soil is and how compromised the root system has become,” according to a Facebook post from the City of Lynn Fire Department.

Fire officials are warning people to avoid the extensive affected area in Lynn Woods, between Pennybrook Road and Great Woods Road.

Gannon Golf Course closed the last nine holes of the eighteen-hole course this weekend due to advancing flames.

“I play golf quite a lot. I didn’t come here yesterday because it gave me a headache,” said Linda Courtemanche. “These kinds of things happen in different places in the country, but now it’s happening to us too.”

According to the fire brigade, the fire currently poses no threat to homes or buildings.

They thank the public for the outpouring of donations at Broadway Station in Lynn.

The Lynn wildfire is one of more than 150 wildfires that have started in Massachusetts in the past week alone.

“There are currently bushfires burning across the state, with many large ones on the north coast. Hopefully there are several days of rain in the future,” the City of Lynn Fire Department Facebook post added.

This is a development story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
