Rain is likely in South Florida this week. But don’t expect a break from the extreme heat just yet

South Florida can expect some rain after Memorial Day. But it will remain scorching hot this week, despite the chance of precipitation.

South Florida broke temperature records last week. This week will see highs in the 90s, light winds and plenty of humidity, according to the National Weather Service station at Miami International Airport. Ana Torres-Vázquez, a meteorologist with the agency, said the region “will see temperatures in the mid-90s at least through the end of the work week.”

The heat index could reach triple digits again. Rain chances increase after tomorrow and could include classic summer afternoon thunderstorms in South Florida.

“There will be a bit of a front, although not very cold, moving into the Florida peninsula. So that will create conditions for rain and thunderstorms,” said Torres-Vázquez.

The meteorologist had some tips to keep South Florida residents safe in the sweltering heat: stay hydrated, find shelter and make sure you take rest breaks if you have to be outside for extended periods of time.

Saturday also marks another dreaded milestone: Hurricane season begins June 1. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released its preseason hurricane forecast last week, heralding another busy hurricane season. The federal agency predicts there will be 17 to 25 named storms and eight to 13 hurricanes. Four to seven are forecast to reach major hurricane status, according to NOAA, which predicts an 85% chance of “an above-normal season.”

“Severe weather and emergencies can occur at any time, which is why individuals and communities must be prepared today,” said Erik A. Hooks, deputy administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in a recent press release.

The new preseason hurricane forecast is the highest ever issued. Brace yourself, Florida
