Thanksgiving Day will be the story of two different types of weather in the Philadelphia region: rain in the morning, sun and wind in the afternoon.
Now to the details: Scattered showers will develop after 3 a.m., giving Thanksgiving a wet start. Periods of persistent and cold rain are likely through early afternoon, with totals between a half inch and 1 inch of rain. There may be a period of snow or a rain/snow mix in the Poconos with 1 to 3 inches of slushy snow at the highest elevations. There is a NEXT Thanksgiving weather warning in effect until mid-afternoon due to the rain’s impact on road and air travel.
Black Friday shopping will be cold but dry across the area, with highs around 40 degrees. Bitterly cold Arctic air arrives from Canada on Friday evening. This will be the coldest air of the season and the coldest since last winter.
Due to this blast of cold air, a second NEXT Weather Alert is in effect for this weekend.
Despite the sunshine, highs will only reach the mid to upper 30s on Saturday and Sunday, with chills below freezing all day and night. Speaking of nights, morning lows will drop into the 20s for the entire area, including the city. Be sure to winterize outdoor pipes and make special preparations for pets with a warm place to stay and fresh water that won’t freeze. Even with their warm fur, they are not used to this cold.
The month of December starts on Sunday and the meteorological winter begins.
Next week looks sunny, cool and dry, with highs reaching the low 40s. The NEXT Weather team will keep you informed of any future changes.
