MINNEAPOLIS— Minnesota Vikings legend Randy Moss will step back from his broadcasting role at ESPN “to focus on a personal health challenge,” the network announced Friday.
Moss spoke about his health problems in a video on social media over the weekend, saying he’s been “fighting something internal.”
Here’s ESPN’s full statement:
“Pro Football Hall of Famer Randy Moss will be leaving Sunday NFL Countdown for an extended period of time to focus on a personal health challenge. He briefly addressed the matter at the start of the show on December 1. For nearly a decade, Randy has been has been a valuable member of the team and has consistently taken Countdown to the next level with his insight and passion. He has the full support of ESPN and we look forward to welcoming him back when he is ready.”
Moss, 47, did not reveal the exact nature of his health problems but said: “Your boy will get through this, I have a great team of doctors and I have a great family around me.” Moss addressed viewers’ concerns about his eyes appearing yellow during a broadcast, saying he planned to wear sunglasses occasionally. He also encouraged men to get their annual checkups and blood tests.
Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell, Moss’ teammate with the New England Patriots, the organization offered support for the NFL great earlier this week.
“I, on behalf of the entire Minnesota Vikings organization, want to send him our well wishes and support,” O’Connell said. “We love Randy and know our fan base feels the same way. Truly honored by all the fans and truly by all the NFL fans, the Hall of Famer that he is. I just want him to know that we are here for him. Here from Eagan And we always supported him.’
The Pro Football Hall of Famer joined ESPN in 2016, four years after retiring from the NFL. During 14 seasons in the league – including two separate stints with the Vikings – Moss collected 982 catches for 15,292 yards and 156 touchdowns. Only Jerry Rice has more receiving touchdowns.
