Jacob Trouba has been fined $5,000 for elbowing the Florida Panthers winger Evan Rodrigues during the second period of Sunday’s Game 3 matchup, the NHL’s Department of Player Safety announced.
That is the maximum fine allowed under the collective labor agreement.
With New York leading by one and just under two and a half minutes left in the period, Rodrigues cut to the net and the Blueshirts captain charged toward him and made contact in the main area.
The officials reviewed the play for a possible major and match penalty, before ultimately ruling it a minor, giving Trouba four minutes in the box for that penalty and also for his original cutting foul.
Barclay Goodrow would add a shorthanded goal a few minutes later and New York would avoid the penalty.
This isn’t the first time Trouba has been in the middle of a controversy this season over a possible high elbow to an opponent’s head.
The hard-hitting defender was suspended for two games earlier this season after hitting the Vegas Golden Knights forward Pavel Dorofeev with a high elbow.
Despite many feeling he should be sidelined again this time, the league seems to have thought otherwise.
