Rangers try to trade Jacob Trouba to Red Wings, but obstacles still remain

Rangers try to trade captain Jacob Trouba to the Detroit Red Wings, according to multiple reports. But obstacles remain.

Trouba’s limited no-trade clause (a departure from his full no-movement clause) takes effect Monday. The Rangers had already asked him last week to list the 15 teams on his list, The Athletic’s Arthur Staple reported.

Larry Brooks of The New York Post reported Monday that Trouba is not happy about a potential trade to Detroit, but that he “will eventually be sent elsewhere, possibly on waivers” if he tries to block a deal with the Red Wings.

The Post reported later Monday that the “suggestion” that the Blueshirt captain rejected a trade is not true.

Brooks added that one factor that could keep Trouba with the Rangers this season is his wife, Doctor Kelly Tyson-Troubahas one year left in her three-year residency at a New York hospital after having a year of her residency deferred at the beginning of the program. This would mean there is no guarantee Trouba would accept a trade, even to one of the 15 teams on his roster, until his wife completes the program.

As we wrote when we discussed Trouba’s future at Rangers last month, it is difficult to swap the captain.

Trouba has a contract through the 2025-26 season, with an annual salary cap of $8 million.

And his 2023-24 campaign was a struggle as he was consistently vulnerable defensively.

Trouba also struggled in the play-offs, with defensive mistakes and an excessive number of penalties.

It should be noted that Trouba was not playing at 100 percent towards the end of the regular season and in the play-offs due to an ankle injury.
