Godzilla has disappeared Down Under. Earlier this week, a 1991 Nissan R32 Skyline GT-R was stolen in Australia – taken straight from Nissan’s Australian national headquarters. There are few details about the theft, but local police are investigating the case, according to Australian news outlet News.com.au.
“Unfortunately, our original R32 GT-R was stolen and is now subject to a police investigation,” a Nissan Australia spokeswoman told the publication. The car was part of Nissan’s heritage collection and was stored at Nissan’s headquarters in Mulgrave, a suburb of the capital Melbourne.
The red sports car (seen above), with license plate GTR 091, is one of a small number of GT-R models imported into the country by the automaker. The theft comes just days after Nissan Australia commemorated the rise of the R32 GT-R by winning the Bathurst 1000 in 1991 and 1992.
Motorsport victories, such as those in the Bathurst 1000 in ’91 and ’92, earned the GT-R its nickname ‘Godzilla’, as the cars proved almost unbeatable as the Japanese monster of cinematic fame. For example, during the 1991 Shell Australian Touring Car Championship, the GT-R won seven of nine races; there were a total of 425 racing laps in the nine races, and the Nissans led 337 of them.
The stolen car is said to have an estimated value of approximately $250,000 AUD, or approximately $170.00. But the car has more than just monetary value, and Nissan is obviously hoping for a safe return. They are asking anyone with information that could assist in its recovery to contact Victoria Police or Nissan Australia, the latter by emailing csc@nissan.com.au.
