Ray Roberts Lake State Park reports power loss and no significant injuries after tornado

Deadly storms felled trees, knocked out power and caused minor injuries at Ray Roberts Lake State Park, Texas park officials announced Sunday morning.

Saturday evening, a deadly tornado ripped through Sanger, Valley View and other towns surrounding the park, evacuating buildings, overturning cars and injuring dozens. Early estimates from officials indicate that at least two children are among the seven reported fatalities.

Texas Parks and Wildlife said the park will remain closed “until visitor services can be restored.” One of the park’s Facebook pages says the site will be out of service until at least next Tuesday.

Officials did not specify how many people were on the park grounds when the vortex struck or how many were injured.

The park announced Saturday that it was sold out and had reached capacity.

Shocked but relieved stories of the storm posted online describe campers taking refuge in park bathrooms as the wind blew past.

“Quail Run was hit hard,” said a woman whose parents were at the scene. “Many campers, trucks and boats with trees on them or fallen over.”
