Readers voted on who won the presidential debate and shared candid opinions

It’s been a week since the first and possibly only presidential debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.

We asked readers to vote in our poll that closed last weekend. We asked them who they thought had won and whether the debate had influenced their vote.

Scroll down to see the results and read the responses from local readers who were willing to take our survey.

But of course, a lot of news has come to light during this time: The Trump-Vance ticket doubled down on the discredited story about Haitians eating cats and dogs in Springfield, Ohio. The Harris-Walz campaign launched a new outreach effort targeting the Latino community. On Sunday, there was an apparent assassination attempt on Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate.

This poll is unscientific and reflects readers’ sentiment about the Harris-Trump head-to-head.

Public responses to questions

We received responses from over 300 readers to this poll. Below is a sample of responses.

Ask: Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump faced off in a debate hosted by ABC on Tuesday night. How did the debate influence your vote for the president?

“Kamala Harris didn’t fall for Donald Trump’s bait! Her facial expressions were perfect; they reflected what she could have been thinking without using words. A great performance!” – Barbara Mueller, Alexander

“I will vote for Trump because it was 3 to 1 and Harris never answered any real questions, she just tried to taunt Trump. No real important questions were answered.” – Deborah Fowler, Alexander

“Vote for Harris. It didn’t change my vote. I wish she had talked more about the economy. It’s good, people are traveling, gas is low, etc.” – Diane Wilson, Hendersonville

“Kamala Harris is an idiot. She has been calling the shots for the last four years. She has bragged about being present for every major decision and has cast a record number of tie-breaking votes in the U.S. Senate at the expense of the American taxpayer. Hilary Clinton is smarter and more stylish than she (Kamala) could ever be” – Phillip Marlow, Hendersonville

“The problems are there and they are Harris’s. No solutions are given. All she did was act like an immature adult and bully President Trump or try to!” – Patricia Sams, Mills River “It has made it even clearer that Donald Trump is neither fit to be president nor has the mental stability to hold a leadership position in government or any other organization.” – Bryan Benson, Asheville
