Reading man sentenced to 80 to 160 years in prison for shooting at law enforcement officers

A Reading man will spend 80 to 160 years in state prison in 2020 for shooting four law enforcement officers who were trying to serve a search warrant at his Bingaman Street home.

Joshua Perez, 36, of the 500 block of Bingaman Street, was sentenced Monday by Berks County Presiding Judge M. Theresa Johnson on four counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, possession of drugs with intent to deliver, conspiracy and related charges.

Perez was convicted by a jury at a trial in August.

According to researchers:

Berks County detectives and Reading police officers obtained a search warrant for Perez’s home as part of a drug investigation and attempted to serve it shortly before 6:30 a.m. on August 21, 2020.

The officers announced their presence and then entered the apartment complex.

As they walked up the stairs between the second and third floors of the building, Perez fired four shots at them through a closed door to a third-floor bedroom. No one was affected.

Perez climbed out of a roof window and fled. He was found on a neighboring roof about 15 minutes later and taken into custody.

Police were able to recover a loaded handgun and an AR-15 rifle during their investigation.

Officials said investigators did not return fire because they could not see who had shot at them.
