Report: Zaidi, Melvin contracts guaranteed until 2025, not until 2026

Report: Zaidi, Melvin contracts guaranteed through 2025, not 2026 originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

Giants manager Bob Melvin and president of baseball Farhan Zaidi are believed to have had contracts that ran through the 2026 MLB season.

That does not seem to be the case.

Melvin and Zaidi have guaranteed contracts that run only through the 2025 MLB season, The San Francisco Chronicle’s John Shea reported Tuesday, citing industry sources.

This news contradicts what the Giants seemingly announced when Melvin was introduced as their new manager on October 25, 2023.

During the introductory press conference, Zaidi said that Melvin had signed a three-year contract. But as Shea reports, it was actually only a two-year contract.

Shortly afterwards, Giants chairman Greg Johnson confirmed that the team had agreed in principle to a contract extension with Zaidi through the 2026 season, bringing the executive’s contract to match Melvin’s.

According to Shea, both Melvin and Zaidi have provisions in their contracts that could keep them with the Giants through the 2026 season.

The Giants had high expectations when they brought in Melvin last fall to replace Gabe Kapler as manager, but the team underperformed for most of his first season and is on the verge of being eliminated from the National League playoffs.

The Giants have signed several key free agents this offseason, but they enter Tuesday’s season opener against the Milwaukee Brewers with a 71-73 record.

Given how this season has gone, it’s possible Melvin and Zaidi have one more season to prove they can lead the Giants back to the top of MLB.
